Introduction to Genetics

Designed and taught full semester course. 45 hours.
Course Description: This course integrates the most important concepts in classical and molecular genetics into an overall picture of what a gene is, how it functions, how it may be altered, and how it is inherited. You learn about the molecular basis of gene function and mutation, Mendelian genetics, transmission systems, regulation of cellular processes, developmental genetics, cytoplasmic inheritance, population genetics, and multifactoral inheritance. Also covered are recent advances in biotechnology that have genetic implications, including the Human Genome Project, and advances in genetic engineering technology. Prerequisite: A college-level course in biology.

Course Description: 10-day programming crash-course. The course will cover basic UNIX, Perl programming, and SQL with particular focus on bioinformatics problems/applications. Each day, there will be two one-hour lectures, followed by 2-2.5 hours of programming exercises. There are no prerequisites for the course.
